FILM PROGRAM Beautiful Nightmares Paris after the war
“The true revelation, the real impetus that made me want to represent what I see came to me in a movie theatre. I was watching a newsreel.” – Alberto Giacometti, 1945
Working in sympathy with the prevailing philosophy of "existentialism", Giacometti's austere works were powerful metaphors for the human condition in a disillusioned age. This series of documentaries and feature films reflects the collective state of mind in France after WWII. Includes Orphée (dir: Jean Cocteau, 1950), Pickpocket (dir: Robert Bresson, 1959) & Les Diaboliques (dir: Henri-George Clouzot, 1955). |
Wed 2pm & 7.15pm Sun 2pm plus Sat and early screenings as indicated Free See Full program > |

FREE LECTURE The human face of God: on Buddhist & Christian Iconography The Barbara Blackman Temenos Foundation annual lecture
Jeremy Naydler, philosopher and author discusses the portrayal of the human beings as divine in the monumental statues of the ancient Egyptian pharaohs; subsequent representations of the Buddha and the Christ; and the struggle in the first centuries of our era to find a new image of the divinised human being. |
