Two Views

The special exhibition Two Views reflects the recent travels of two artists: Keith Smith, well known to Seaview Gallery visitors for his incredibly detailed watercolour paintings; and John Lacey, an award winning South Australian artist who has recently joined Seaview Gallery’s family of artists.

Keith, “as a watercolour artist, I have always been inspired by beautiful places. A boat trip along the Kimberley coast provided me with the challenge of capturing the unique colours and remarkable features of this ruggedly beautiful area in Western Australia.” The guide on the trip was Mike Cusack who, with his wife Susan, spent a year (1987) living in isolation in the harsh Kimberley environment. (They were chosen by Australian Geographic and Dick Smith to become Australia’s first wilderness couple). A trek to the site of the long-abandoned Kunmunya mission, where Mike and Susan lived, was a highlight of the Kimberley experience for Keith. A painting of the “home” they built from bush materials features in the exhibition.

John, “I am a representational artist mainly painting in oil. My work varies from loose impressionistic, free flowing, colourful images of the landscape, to expressionism, which pushes the boundaries of traditional brush and knife painting to contemporary. These images usually have varied techniques of paint application, texture and geometric facets of light and colour integration that pushes them beyond the expected.
