Exhibited alongside 29 of Claude Monet's most famous and most loved paintings including Water lilies, Haystacks and Rouen Cathedral are Impressionist masterpieces such as Degas' Racehorses at Longchamp, Cézanne's The Pond and Renoir's The Seine at Chatou. On loan from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

THE LOST BUDDHAS Chinese sculpture from Qingzhou must close 23 November
Lost for over 800 years, the discovery of some 400 Buddhist figures by construction workers levelling a sports field is considered one of the most significant archaelogical finds of the 20th century.
Created nearly 1500 years ago, these are some of the most stunning works of art made in the service of the Buddhist faith. Thirty-five of the best preserved and most exquisite sculptures have travelled from China to the Gallery, and are being seen in Australia for the first time.

HALF LIGHT PORTRAITS FROM BLACK AUSTRALIA opens 21 November
The first major survey of the work of Australian Indigenous artists engaging with the photographic medium and the portrait. Showcasing a range of techniques from classical black and white portraiture to digital images, the exhibition offers an unprecedented insight into the black experience that transcends national borders and the reality of the everyday.

TOM ARTHUR The Fertilization of Drako Vülen's cheese pizza must close 23 November
First exhibited at the Gallery in 1975, this extraordinary installation was the first of a major trilogy of works produced by the Sydney-based sculptor in the 1970s which explored states of flux and emergence and the way knowledge is perceived.

WATER GLIMPSES Film Series until 7 December Inspired by Monet’s “water landscapes” this series continues to present feature films whose poetic tone derive from their enthralling images of nature, the natural world and particularly water. This month see Colour of Paradise (Dir: Majid Majidi, 1999) and Aguirre: the wrath of God (Dir: Werner Herzog, 1972) and Knife in the water (Dir: Roman Polanski, 1962).

TALES OF GENJI FREE LECTURE & FILM Sat 29 Nov. from 12noon In conjunction with the exhibition GENJI: THE WORLD OF THE SHINING PRINCE (opening next month) Dr Royall Tyler, Faculty of Asian studies, ANU gives an introduction to the Japanese novel by Lady Murasaki from the early 11th century The tale of Genj - considered the world's first 'modern' novelist and the world's first novel. Followed by a screening of the 1952 cinematic reinterpretation, The tale of Genji (Dir: Kozaburo Yoshimura) with a new 35mm print. Film and lecture with the support of The Japan Foundation.
