Lidia Zatorska - Artist statement

Lidia Zatorksa has drawn and painted since her early childhood. Born in Poland, she studied Polish Literature at Krakow University before teaching Art and Polish Language in Jelenia Gora, in the mountainous south-western corner of her homeland.

In 1982 when the communist government declared martial law, she travelled with her young family as a political refugee to start a new life in Australia. Here she started to paint and study art at East Sydney College, now the National Art School, and in Desiderius Orban's studio in Northwood, run by Eva Barry. She also taught art and Polish Language to young students herself.

Lidia's favourite themes are landscapes painted from memory, often scenes inspired by the picturesque alpine countryside where she spent her childhood. She also loves to paint details of her garden, of which she is justly proud.

Her work has been exhibited at many galleries around Sydney - including the Balmain Gallery, Mary Place Gallery, the Seymour Theatre, Delmar and Dabrowa Galleries - and many pieces have been purchased for private collections. In 1993 she won high commendation in a special exhibition organised by Waverley Council.

Lidia has long held a passion for interior and fabric design. She had often been asked to design and decorate interiors, even at the schools in which she taught in Poland. In 1992, she commenced fabric and cushion design and was commissioned by David Jones. Her hand painted swatches of fabric and cushions were displayed in the store twice, in December 1992, and for Mothers’ Day 1993.

Her design fabric has been displayed at Leslie Walford Interiors in 1993, when she was critically acclaimed by Leslie Walford himself, and in decorating editions of "Belle" "New Woman" and "Vogue Living" magazine

Since 1992 she paints and experiments in different media; watercolour, pastel and recently has been exploring acrylic and oil.
