22 june - 9 july

Ceramics has played a major role within art education at RMIT University since 1917. A proud and continuing tradition of learning has resulted in graduates who have become many of Australia’s leading artists and educators within the field. Contemporary ceramics draws both from a long tradition and recent innovation and retains an enduring ability to enrich and invigorate our culture. With the development of increasingly porous physical and cultural world boundaries, education has accordingly become more global and international in its outlook.

Responding to this spirit of internationalisation, in 1997, RMIT University began teaching BA Fine Art programs in Painting and Ceramics, in collaboration with the Hong Kong Arts Centre and its teaching staff. The result is a strong, innovative and expressive group of emerging artists, many of whom are already establishing international reputations.

Innovative Ceramics: Melbourne-Hong Kong 2006 explores common ground and cultural difference in showcasing works by graduates from both cities.  It also celebrates the spirit of cooperation that has evolved between the two institutions as well as the diversity and excellence of the ceramic works that have emerged from this joint program over the past decade. Ms. Fiona Wong, (lecturer, ceramics Hong Kong) will attend the opening as part of an RMIT residency.
