International Symposium
Saturday 18 August 2001 Imagination is the original interactive multimedia; and the powerful metaphor of the journey is destined to grow ever more vertiginous as the silicon revolution heats up. How virtual is our being already? We construct virtual maps and models, sample things from the media of our senses and construct a world that is, at the same time, our experience of the world. Space Odysseys: sensation and immersion will be held at the Art Gallery of New South Wales between 18 August and 21 October 2001. Curator Victoria Lynn. This pre-eminent contemporary art event presents the work of leading international and Australian contemporary artists who create large-scale installations that physically immerse or surround the viewer. Major international artists including Bruce Nauman, James Turrell, Mariko Mori, Luc Courchesne and Gary Hill; Australian artists, Lynette Wallworth, David Haines and Joyce Hinterding. This symposium, held in conjunction with the exhibition Space Odysseys: sensation and immersion, will offer lively perspectives on immersive and virtual experiences in innovative art. Where are we going? How did we get there? How do we come to grips with this experience that puts us at the crossroads between new technologies and the human senses?
