chase contemporary & tribal arts is a new Sydney gallery focusing on select mid to late career painters and sculptors working in various mediums.

Shows are curated by John Rix, a collector of museum quality Oceanic and South East Asian Tribal material, and paintings and sculpture by Australian and New Zealand artists since the late 1970's.

Influenced by the "primitivism" and "modernist" movements of the 20th century, the gallery reflects the agenda of its director, who is vitally interested in artists who have found their "voice".

Exhibitions this year have included an extraordinary installation of mixed media material by Jacques Charoux - "Coco de Mer" - embracing the top level gallery area.

Two group shows focusing on Sculpture, co-curated with Kevin Norton, including artists working in metal and other mediums, the first opening in late May and the second show, coinciding with "Sculpture by the Sea" in November.

Work by Aboriginal Contemporary and New South Wales based Koori artists.

And a very strong showing of new work by gallery painters and sculptors throughout the year.

Additionally, in association with Guy Earl-Smith of East Australian Trading Consolidated, the first auction held at the gallery took place on Sunday 9th April, and this ran live on the internet via eBay USA. Several other auctions this year of a similiar format are also scheduled by Guy, and you are most certainly urged to preview the marvellous range of interesting pieces offered by various Australian vendors in the August auction, closer to the event.

Focusing on Tribal Artifacts, Antiquities, and quality South East Asian Buddhist related images, these auctions herald an evolving relationship with the two parties, with further synergies to be announced.

Guy will generally be available Thursdays and Fridays in the gallery to access material submitted by vendors for consideration, and he will be also offering high end objects by private treaty to collectors both locally and internationally, which will be available to view in the gallery by appointment.

and work by the unknown artists of Oceania and South East Asia

An earlier show in the upper level gallery captured the attention of Harvey Shields of www.seriousart.org, a site devoted to the critical review of contemporary art. This dynamic site is well worth visiting as it critically reviews work of real integrity.

Currently, the upstairs gallery floor features abstract landscape paintings by Karl Mattas. Using traditional oil paint on linen, Karl has produced the most luminous views of Clarkes Point Reserve, sited near Woolich, on Sydney harbour. Karl has worked in the visual arts; first in Finnish television and after moving to Australia in 1971, Karl continuted working as a film editor at the ABC in Sydney. Karl started painting in 1979 and left the ABC in 1990 to paint full-time. He has been exhibiting regularly in Australia since 1984 and in Finland since 1999.

Downstairs we are featuring the work of Kate Tapp. These works are a landscape investigation of the Roper Vallery Region in the Northern Territory. Kates work has focused on the Old Roper Valley Station and the surrounding region, which she, along with her six brothers and three sisters once owned. The land has since been reclaimed by Aboriginal people because of a Sacred Site connection to the Springs where an important Dreaming took place.

In both instances, the work is priced at a very reasonable level, which bears no relation to its intrinsic merit.

We are able to offer Kate Tapp's extraordinarily beautiful work from $250 for a very small piece to $3,000 for the largest works measuring 122cm x 178cm.

Karl's work follows suit in this respect!
