Disaster Planning and Disaster Response for Museums and Art Collections

Coburn Fine Art Conservation can also provide evaluations on storage facilities for art work.

General Tips:

Paintings:

Correct handling is vital. Look for existing damages and fragile areas before moving.
Where appropriate, wear gloves, as dirt and oil can irreversibly mark the surface.
Never allow any objects to rest against the surface.
Handle as little and as infrequently as possible.

Works on paper:

Never carry works by one corner.
Store flat in smooth paper folders, in acid free paper.
Never store flaky or chalky mediums in mylar (polyester folders).
Do not frame under perspex.
Avoid fixing with hairspray or artists' fixatives.
Framed works should have deep rebate to allow for air circulation.

One is before conservation, the other is the finished result.
