For the past 13 years John Aland has lived in the shadow of the Sydney Park chimneys and an ongoing group of drawings has grown from observation of individual inhabitants, some itinerant, others resident and also living in their shadow. Aland has drawn characters such asthe "Lady of the Stones", of the bus waiting shelter where she lived for a year, wanderer of the kilns as far more than shadows passing over our eyes for us to see.
These works celebrate life through the majesty of the chimney stack, mystery of the kilns, the glory of our multiple human directions, in a range from fine details to inventions in paint, which this theme has awaken in spiritual and physical texture.
"There is a searing joy in recognising dark realities - the heights and depths of art which can slice the soul to tears, like human life that is lived at one pole, knowing experience of both." - John Aland
