Eminent photographer Lorrie Graham was commissioned to photograph the exotic mix of the people of our city in the lead up to the Olympic Games for a stunning new photographic exhibition called Sydneysiders which will open at the Museum of Sydney, 15 July as part of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Arts Festival.
After 12 months shooting Lorrie Graham says it has "been almost impossible to stop. There was more diversity than I originally thought and it is even more intriguing the further you go out from the city centre."
Lorrie Graham began Sydneysiders by writing lists of rituals and people to photograph. She didn't imagine that when shooting Aneta and Bill's wedding in Arncliffe that it would become 20 hours spent with them and their families. "They let me into every aspect of their big day," she said.
Lifesavers were another fascination. "Nothing could have prepared me for the 300-odd kids dotted all over Coogee Beach, hell bent on becoming a lifesaver,"
In this exhibition Lorrie Graham reveals the extraordinary through her 50 photographs of seemingly ordinary people of Sydney.
Some of the people featured in Sydneysiders are Aneta and Bill at their Arncliffe wedding, Huon Procter at a Gothic Ritual Dance Party in Surry Hills, 14-year old James Adams who loves to surf at North Maroubra, 9 year old Fiona Anderson with her prize rat 'Pinky' at the Fancy Rat Show in Quakers Hill, 67-year old scientist, John Cook, who is always at Coogee Beach at dawn and Maria Inlesias, who loves to go Drag Racing down at Eastern Creek.
"As a photographer, I bring my own baggage and background to choice of subject. Sydneysiders has helped me to discover the complex and diverse mix of people which make up our wonderful city," added Lorrie Graham.
