"When compared with that of other nations the story of Australian art is a comparatively short one, but it is, nevertheless, full of fascination and interest. Australian art has gradually acquired qualities as distinctive as the social attitudes and speech of Australians. To observe how these peculiarities have asserted themselves is one of the fascinations of the study of Australian art." - Smith, B. Australian Painting 1788-1990, Oxford University Press, Melbourne 1990, p.vi

With over 80 works, spanning 120 years, Savill Galleries Melbourne and Sydney examines Australia's aesthetic evolution dating from 1888. The show will include fine examples from this period of Australian art including traditional works by Arthur Streeton, Hans Heysen and Rupert Bunny as well as early and late modernist (1930s - 1960s) works by artists such as Arthur Boyd, Sidney Nolan, Robert Dickerson and Charles Blackman to name a few. Contemporary painting is represented with major oils by Jeffrey Smart, Garry Shead and William Robinson. All paintings in this show are for sale.
