Off to Paris

John McRae is on his way to Paris for six months. He has two exhibitions in Paris at the Galerie Say during September. The first is a solo called Undressed and the second is a group show with other Australian artists from 1+2, in a show called "2+1".

1 - 15 September 2001SoloDeshabille (Undressed)
15 - 30 September 2001Group"2+1"

McRae's paintings are of people in various states of undress. The seminal ideas are about revealing and the concept of nakedness and undressing as a metaphor about identities people might wear, the facades taken off and the honesty people are able to reveal therein.

McRae's paintings are about the struggle to reveal. Often his figures are taking off the same red garment which in itself becomes a social facade or the concept of who we are. The work is often autobiographical and some of the paintings have become very stylised featuring a re-occurring figure, caught with his pants down.

The work is also influenced by a series of portrait photographs McRae is creating. This series features youngish men a the point of ejaculation, the point of release. Sometimes the male figures in his painted works are captured at the moment.
