WOW International Film Festival
a world of women's cinema: interview with Jacqui North

This year, newly appointed Festival Director, Jacqui North, spoke to Art News on what makes WOW unique in the national screen culture.

Raj Suri

Karigar opened in May 2000. Prior to this Raj Suri was operating as a photographer from home. I almost get the feeling that Raj has reinvented "the shop" as he sees it's virtues as much sort after advantages.

Michele Beevors

Beevors is most recently Influenced by Naomi Kline's writing on multinational brands. Beevors read Kline in the context of a long standing interest in commodity fetishism and feminism. Both of these themes are primary influences in this show.

Amanda Robins - 2001 Dobell prize contender

This painting features the lining of the arm-hole of an Irish, worsted, fitted, green jacket that is so loved that people are always asking, "Where did you get that?"

Rachel Ellison

Ellison's exhibition is a poignant self examination of her role as an artist and how she fits into a social schema where there is a place to belong.

Audrey Rhoda

"Palimpsest...a page that has been written upon many times so that imperfect traces of earlier texts remain..."(Webster's Dictionary)

John McRae

McRae's paintings are of people in various states of undress. The seminal ideas are about revealing and the concept of nakedness and undressing as a metaphor about identities people might wear, the facades taken off...

New Arts Officer at Marrickville Council

Miguel Olmo is an installation artist who has taken over the Arts Officer portfolio at Marrickville Council. His brief includes reshaping local council art grants, managing the Chrissie Cotter Art Gallery and co-ordinating local festivals such as...

William Sandy

Teaching himself after watching the other artists at work, he began to paint for Papunya Tula (an aboriginal corporation) in the early 80s. His work travelled through America in the mid 80s as a part of a group show called Dreaming.

Brad Munro

Brad Munro's exhibition is a working out of his own spiritual journey in the context of a life long trip. Even though his paintings are a means of self-realisation in his words, "we are left with the painting".

Enzo Santoro

The majority of the works are taken from the sketch book he used on his journey. Most of the images are compositions of dramatic architecture like Norman Castles, Cathedrals and large Venetian buildings, others with spires and domes.

The Twain Gallery Cafe

Hang and take, make and keep.

Long Jack Phillipus

Long Jack, a school yardmen at the time, was one of the first men to paint smaller murals around the Papunya School. It preceded the large honey ant mural. From this he has gone on to win major art awards...

The agenda of Walkabout Productions:
a World Vision Gallery

World Vision fund raise for and manage preventative health care for the Papunya Community. Their successful programme is a unique model for other health programmes in Australia as it is focused on preventative measures, such as education and general nutrition and hygiene issues rather than curative health.

Hui Selwood

Hui Selwood's show of New Works at Defiance is the culmination of 12 months work that further explores the creative elements he has used in the past. These elements include both the physical materials and his inspiration.
